Conducting Need Analysis

Listed are some questions you can consider asking to determine the need for the presentation.

  1. Who is the audience – what is their level of seniority within the organization, are they all of the same nationality or are they of diverse nationalities, what is their level of experience?
  2. How much information do they already have and how  much  do they need?
  3. What do they expect from your presentation - data, decision tools, suggestions etc.?
  4. What is the back ground to this presentation - what prompted this presentation?
  5. Who else has approached this topic – what was the approach and is there a specific format?

Let us consider the presentation that was used as an example and answer the questions given above.

  1. My audience – my team lead, his manager, others related to the process - trainer, training manager, process owner, client representative, QA team members, floor coach etc.
  2. The information they have is the summary of the last quarter, they need statistics of the current quarter and break down of data.
  3. They expect a summary, an analysis of the failures, and suggestions to set them right.
  4. Background - review to tune the overall performance and increase productivity.
  5. Your peer approached this last quarter, specific format followed.

You now find yourself better armed to approach the preparation of the presentation.
